Registration Information

FULL - REGISTRATION

Full registration is granted to teachers who meet all the registration requirements. These teachers have passed the criminal history check, and they are of good character and are mentally and physically fit to carry out the roles and duties of a teacher.

CRITERIA

For Primary and Junior Secondary School teachers

    • Hold an Advanced Diploma in Teaching

    • English language proficiency at Level B2 of TELPA test

    • Good character

    • Physically and mentally fit to teach

    • Pass criminal history check

    • Have completed 12 months teaching experience

    • Compliant with other requirements prescribed under the Teacher Registration regulation

For Senior Secondary School teachers

    • Hold a Degree with a Certificate in Teaching

    • English language proficiency at Level B2 of TELPA test

    • Good character

    • Physically and mentally fit to teach

    • Have completed 12 months teaching experience

    • Compliant with other requirements prescribed under the Teacher Registration regulation

OTHER - CATEGORIES

Full registration with conditions

Full registration with conditions will be granted to currently-employed teachers who have not met all of the registration standard requirements. Teachers who hold a Certificate or Diploma in Teaching will be given 5 years to upgrade their qualifications. Teachers who do not achieve B2 level of the TELPA test will be given 3 years to improve their English Language Proficiency. For teachers who already undergone the English test using a different English Assessment test such as IELTS, ISLPR, and KELT, the validity of the test results will be 5 years. If more than 5 years, teachers’ English Language Proficiency will be retested.

A person who is currently employed as a teacher with a Certificate or Diploma in Teaching at any school in Kiribati must complete at least two of the Ministry prescribed Continuing Professional Development modules (40 hours of study) each year.

Provisional registration

Provisional registration is granted to newly graduated teachers after completing their teacher training. They will undertake 12 months of teaching experience under the supervision of a teacher (who has full registration or full registration with conditions), before themselves being granted full registration.

Limited Authority to Teach

Limited Authority to Teach is granted to teacher trainees who teach in the schools. These teachers are Diploma holders who are doing their internship courses in the schools for one year.

Lastly are teachers who are not qualified and certified to teach but have the knowledge and skills to teach and they employed due to teacher shortage under the supervision of a teacher with full registration or full registration with conditions.
